6 Types of Attic Ventilation

by DoItYourself Staff

There are many types of attic ventilation fixtures, from windows to vents. How the attic is designed and used will in part determine what type of ventilation is necessary. For example, an attic that is suitable for living may include windows or skylights, whereas an attic that is little more than a crawlspace may just have vents.

Attic Ventilation: 6 Types

  1. Windows: Windows serve as a means of ventilation as well as a vent. Most likely, attics that are large enough to dwell in will use windows to help keep the room ventilated.
  2. Skylights: Skylights will only work for ventilation if they are able to open. Not only do they let light into an attic, they may also let air in.
  3. Gable Vents: Gable vents are found in home with gable roofs. Gables are the continued siding up to the apex of the roof. The vents are installed directly in the siding near the roof.
  4. Ridge Vents: This type of attic runs along the length of the ridge of the roof. It is one long and narrow vent.
  5. Soffit Vents: Vents found on the soffit or the underside of the overhang of the roof are known as soffit vents.
  6. Box or Dome Vents: These types of vents are fixed to the roof itself and derive their names from their shapes.

Different types of attic ventilation fixtures exist for the several areas of the roof and attic where ventilation is necessary.
