7 Tips for Installing a Dome Ceiling Light

by DoItYourself Staff

A dome ceiling light can be excellent, especially in bathrooms and other small spaces where it can cast a wide light. Although it can seem complex to install a dome ceiling light, it’s actually quite easy. These tips will help the installation of your dome ceiling light go smoothly and quickly.

Electricity

If you’re working on something electrical, you need to make sure that the electricity to that circuit has been shut off. Do this at the breaker. Switch it off, then check again before you begin work on the fixture. Do this by turning the light switch on and off again to make sure no light comes on.

Measuring

In order to have the threaded tube at the correct length for the dome, you’re going to need to measure the dome itself. Do this by placing the dome ceiling light on a flat surface with the dome side facing up. Lay a piece of wood across it and hold a ruler up from the table to the piece of wood. This will give you the height of the dome. You can then adjust the mounting strap on the threaded tube. It should be about 1/8 inch longer than the height of the dome.

Locking

Always lock the nut on the tube after you’ve set the height. This ensures that the final nut won’t move when you install it and will make your installation go far more smoothly.

When you attach the mounting strap to the drywall of the ceiling, check to see if the drywall is below the metal of the junction box. In many cases, it will be flush but where it’s not, you’ll need to make adjustments on the threaded tube for the dome section of your dome ceiling light to fit on properly.

Ground

Be sure to attach the ground wire (this will usually be bare copper) to the green ground screw that is on the mounting strap of your dome ceiling light. Do this before you hook up the neutral and hot wires.

Insulation

The fixture usually comes with insulation so don’t throw it away. Instead, you should keep it in place. This will ensure no warm air escapes through the hole in your ceiling.

Mounting

When you’re ready to mount your dome ceiling light fixture, you’ll need to hold it in place with one hand while you use your other hands to put the washer and the nut over the threaded tube. Screw the nut tightly into place and the fixture will be held firm.

Dome

After you’ve put the light bulbs in place, turn on the breaker then turn on the light. This acts as a check that you’ve wired everything correctly before you complete the installation. If all is well, you’re ready to put the dome into place. Hold it onto the fixture with the tip of the threaded tube through the hole in the dome. There should be room to screw on the nut and the decorative finial that matches the fixture.
