7 Tips for Using a Window Squeegee
A window squeegee is a convenient tool that enables smooth, streak-free cleaning on windows. If you clean your windows using soap, water and rag cloths, you will invariably end up with a streaky, patchy appearance on the glass surface. However, a squeegee removes all the water from the surface, leaving a mirror-like finish. Below are some useful tips for using a window squeegee.
1 – Get All Your Tools Together Beforehand
To wash windows, you will need a mild cleaner such as Dawn® dish washing liquid, a 5 gallon bucket for mixing, water, a washer or scrubber, a scraper or a blade, a squeegee, a ladder for higher windows, a squeegee, replacement blades for the squeegee and some clean, soft pieces of cloth. Keeping all these items handy beforehand is useful because it will make your cleaning job much easier and quicker.
2 – Ensure that the Squeegee Blade is Sharp
To do its job well, a squeegee must have a sharp blade. The blade is actually made of rubber. A new blade has 2 sharp edges that can be interchanged when one of them becomes dull with use. If your squeegee blade is not sharp, turn it around to the other side or replace the blade.
3 – Use a Small Squeegee for the Edges and Corners
It is a good idea to keep a small squeegee handy, in addition to the 10 or 12 inch squeegee you will be using primarily. A small squeegee is ideal for tiny frames or windows and also for getting all the moisture out of edges and corners.
4 – Choose between a Washer with a Scrubber Sleeve or a Sponge
To apply the soap solution on the window, you can use a scrubber sleeve on a handle. For smaller windows, a sponge will do the job just as well. To wipe off excess water, you must keep a few pieces of clean, soft cloth handy. You can use cotton or microfiber for this purpose.
5 – Scrub the Window with the Soap Solution
The first step is to remove all the dry dirt and cobwebs with a broom. After this, you can apply an even layer of the soap solution on the windows.
6 – Use a Scraper or a Blade to Remove Stuck Dirt and Labels
To remove bird droppings, stuck on debris and dirt or old labels from the window, you will need a plastic scraper. Gently scrape the surface till the residue comes off.
7 – Wipe the Water with the Squeegee
After you scraped off the built up material on the window, you can apply another coat of soap water. Use the window squeegee to remove the soap water. You can move the squeegee from top to bottom or side to side. It is important to overlap the coverage area so that one end of the squeegee is always dry. This will prevent streaks. You could also swirl the window squeegee in a motion similar to the S letter. This is a technique used by professional to save time. You can use the cloth pieces to wipe off the water that collects at the bottom of the window.
