7 Tips for Using Fish Tape

by DoItYourself Staff

Fish tape is often used in the home for lighting in the ceiling and around the house, as well as for electronics or other devices that require the use of wires. The strong nature of fish tape makes it dangerous to use and proper precautions must be taken when dealing with fish tape to ensure no injuries. The tips below will help you use fish tape to your advantage.

1 - Always Attach Wires to Fish Tape

Always attach fish tape with wires when using it around the house. This will prevent the fish tape from snapping back and recoiling.

2 - Avoiding Exposure

Bend the last piece of fish tape back to avoid exposing. Keeping it bent back will prevent a hazard from occurring.

3 - Prevent Recoiling

When unfolding fish tape always stand on it to prevent recoiling.

4 - Safe Unraveling

Keep a tight grasp on the roll of fish tape to prevent accidents from occurring, such as the snapping back of the tape.

5 - Securing the Fish Tape

Always ensure that you tie up the fish tape when not in use. Secure a roll of fish tape by wrapping one end around the coil through the center of the roll. Wrapping the end will cause the fish tape to lock itself.

6 - Mounting Fish Tape

Fish tape is a good means of mounting an option onto the wall.

7 - Mark the Fish Tape

Mark how far you plan on using the fish tape with a piece of electrical tape.
