7 Tips to Using Laminate Flooring Glue

Laminate flooring glue is a product used in the installation of laminate floors. This adhesive is specifically designed for laminate flooring and is often used in traditional laminate wooden floorings. Using laminate flooring glue has many benefits, including creating a more durable and sturdy laminate flooring.

1. High Traffic Areas

Although there are self-adhesive and glueless laminate floorings available on the market, it is advisable to use laminate flooring glue in areas where high foot traffic is expected. The glue can help strengthen the installation of the floor, preventing it from being removed accidentally. Also, use the glue in areas where spills or the presence of liquid is high. This essentially makes the laminate flooring water resistant. Place some glue in areas like the kitchen floor or near the sink.

2. Read the Instructions

Always, always read the package instructions before using a laminate flooring glue. Each type and brand of laminate glue has specific instructions that you should follow so you don't compromise the glue's effectiveness.

3. Amount of Glue Applied

One of the main mistakes beginners make when using glue to install laminate floors is that they apply too much glue on the planks. Applying excessive amounts of glue can prevent you from properly fitting the tongue and groove together. When this happens, you end up with seams that are open. However, applying too little glue is also bad. If too little glue is placed in between the planks, it will not seal properly, causing moisture to enter the planks, thus resulting into various problems.

4. Type of Glue

When using the glued method in laminate flooring, it is advisable to use urethane-based adhesive products. These types of adhesives contain less moisture and the laminate flooring will not likely absorb this moisture. Also, do not use laminate flooring glue that contains water, unless it is recommended by the manufacturer.

5. Where to Apply Glue

Glue should only be placed in between the planks and not underneath it. It is important to remember that you do not want to glue the flooring onto the subfloor, but instead glue the plank pieces together. It is also advisable to apply glue along the entire top of the tongue of the first plank and then the bottom of the groove on the second plank.

6. Allow the Laminate Flooring Glue to Set

Just like any constructive adhesives, laminate flooring glue requires a certain amount of time to set. For laminate flooring glue, it is best to let it set for at least 24 hours before you can walk on the glued areas. Otherwise, it may cause the planks to move and set the glue off. While the glue is drying, you can leave the spacers in place until the glue has set and is completely dry. 

7. Clean Up

Another important tip that you should remember is to always wipe off any excess after application. This is to prevent the glue from drying up and creating an uneven floor. Often times, excess glue appears when you fit the planks together and glue seeps out from between the seams.
