7 Ways to Reduce Stress While Working
In these times of tough competition and tight economy, most of us are looking for ways to reduce stress, be it at the home or workplace. You can effectively combat stress by taking control of the situation, and by following some of the following tips.
1. Recognize the Signs of Stress
There are several ways in which stress manifests itself in our lives. Look for some of the most common signs of stress, which can be physical, or mental. Physical symptoms of excessive stress include indigestion, stomach upsets, headaches, migraines, and insomnia. Mental and emotional side effects are commonly inability to concentrate, loss of memory, mood swings, depression, and excessive anger. Workplace stress also leads to lack of fulfillment, lower performance, and loss of interest in the work.
2. Take Care of Your Health
Healthy living equips you to better deal with the challenges at work. Follow a healthy diet, and consume your meals at regular intervals of time. Exercise daily, be it walking for half an hour everyday, or aerobics, or even dancing. Keeping fit is one of the best ways to fight stress. Smoking and drinking may seem to reduce stress levels temporarily. However, as their effect wears off, these stimulants cause a greater deal of stress. Get enough rest, and sleep at least 7 hours a day.
3. Manage Your Time Effectively
Leave for work a few minutes ahead of schedule. This will keep you calm in case of delays, and you can spend a few extra minutes getting ready for the day. Schedule your work well. Prioritize your tasks in order of importance and time sensitivity. Try to tackle tougher tasks early, so that you can relax through the rest of the day.
4. Be Assertive
Avoid taking on too much work. Be aware of your abilities and limitations. If you are under too much pressure, ask for help. Try to have the work reallocated to someone else. Do not set unrealistic goals for yourself, as you will end up stressing yourself, and also end up disappointed. Do your best, and think positive. Try to look at every situation in a humorous light, instead of focusing on the negatives.
5. Take Regular Breaks
Avoid burying yourself in work all day. Try to take short breaks every couple of hours, if you can. Avoid caffeine, as it stimulates you and contributes to increase in stress levels. If you are short of time, try to shut your eyes and meditate for a couple of minutes.
6. Make Friends
Workplace stress can be effectively reduced if you have friends you can talk to. You can also count on friends for help in times of excessive stress, or tough deadlines. Shared humor and outings with friends in your free time can make your day much more pleasant. You will also start to look forward to going to work.
7. Enjoy Your Time Away from Work
When you are not working, indulge in recreational activities that work great for stress relief. Enjoy your free time with your family and friends. Try to take vacations or go on short trips to new places.
