9 Different Recessed Lighting Trim Options
There is a huge range of recessed lighting trim that can be used to jazz up a light fixture. The trim is the only part of the lighting that is visible. Most domestic recessed light fittings are 4, 5, and 6 inch diameters which makes it easier to choose a trim to fit your fixture.
Choosing Recessed Light Trim
When choosing trims, make sure they match with your house style and décor. Some situations require special trims, such as humid locations and small spaces. Usually there are many trims that will match any one housing which means you have a variety of styles to choose from.
The most important thing to remember is that incandescent bulbs get hot and the trim must have the appropriate UL listing for the bulb used.
1. Baffles
Baffles trap and shape the light, reducing brightness and minimizing glare by narrowing the focus of the beam. The ‘grooves’ on the trim surface and interior give a widely spread and subdued lighting effect. These are usually found in black as that is better at absorbing light.
2. Reflectors
Reflectors maximize light output by using shiny metal to reflect the light out into the room. They are great for accent and task applications. These are great for use on stairways and other places as they amplify the light effect. They can also to concentrate the light towards a particular point.
3. Wall Washers
These visually increase the perceived size of a room by emphasizing vertical surfaces. These are great for highlighting fireplaces ad wall art like pictures and hangings. These have the appearance of a metal washer retaining a glass cover, sort of like an eyeball trim but only cover the light from one side.
4. Diffusers
Diffusers and lenses are great for bathrooms and closets as they shield and diffuse the light.
5. Eyeball Trims
These types of trims surround the light bulb like an ‘eyeball’ and provide directional lighting for wall washing and accent lighting. They are adjustable to suit the purpose.
6. Open Trims
Open trims create attractive finishes and are probably the most economical finished look. These are typically white to match most ceilings.
7. Slotted Trims
Slotted trims only have a small slot opening for the light and are great at creating specific areas of lighting. A pinhole trim is similar with an even smaller opening.
8. Decorative Trims
These trims give a stylish and attractive boost to a room. They come in a variety of finishes and colors.
9. Lensed Trims
These are best for bathrooms as they stand up to a lot of moisture. They use a plastic or glass cover over the light bulb. These trims can also be used in areas that are a damage risk to the bulb, such as sporting areas.
Enhancing the Lighting
Recessed lighting adds a touch of elegance to any room or space and the choice of trim can enhance that effect. You can choose from a range of colors and styles to reflect your home and personal style. The trim tends to set the mood of the room and can be used to highlight features and draw the eye.
