A decora switchis a flat style of light switch that is made of an angled piece of plastic as opposed to the more traditional small knob-style switches. Decora switches have become quite common in many newer homes, and are often preferred because they have a lower visual impact on the wall than traditional switches.
Installing a Decora Switch
Decora switches are installed just like standard switches. Standard 12-by-3 electrical wiring is required. The ground is wrapped around the green screw. The hot wire connects to copper and the neutral connects to silver. Decora generally switches offer wire connectors, which are small holes on the back of the switch which the wire can be pressed into to allow for an easier connection. When installing a decora switch, or any other electrical device, it is recommended that you cut power to the area using the breaker panel.
Other Features Offered By Decora Switches
There are a wide variety of switch options available in the decora style. Timing devices and dimmers are both available. The dimmer decora switches work in one of two fashions. One model uses two digitally operated buttons to raise or lower the level. The other uses a toggle switch and a built-in RF receiver that allows a remote to control the lighting level.
