A Guide to Weight Limits for Toggle Bolts
Toggle bolts are just one of the many different kinds of bolts that are found in hardware stores and used in home projects. They come in handy for hanging heavy objects on walls as they will not break or snap. They have wings that serve as an anchor base, making them stronger and more durable than regular bolts or nails.
One of the most important things to know when you use toggle bolts is the amount of weight they can bear. While these bolts are designed to take large amounts of weight, the amount can vary depending on the size of the anchor and the wall you are using it on. Make sure you are aware of the guidelines; you could end up with broken chandeliers or pictures as a result of the toggle bolt giving away.
How to Use a Toggle Bolt
Start by drilling a hole for the bolt. Make sure it is large enough to allow the toggle to go through. First, separate the toggle and screw and then attach the screw to whatever it is you want to hang on the wall. Then attach the toggle back to the screw. Now you need to turn the toggle far enough up the screw that the toggle does not turn sideways as this will stop the toggle from opening itself later. Next hold the object you want to hang to the location where the hole is drilled and push the toggle through the hole. When you hear the toggle wings pop, you can pull the screw back and secure and tighten it.
Gypsum Wallboard
For a 3/8-inch gypsum wallboard, a 1/8 inch anchor can hold a maximum of 150 lbs., however this goes up to 310 lbs. if with 3/4-inch wallboard. As the anchor sizes increase, you will be able to add more and more weight. The most you can add is 600 lbs with a 3/4-inch wallboard with a 1/2-inch anchor. The most weight a 3/16-inch anchor will take is 420 lbs. A 1/4-inch anchor can take 445 lbs.; 5/16-inch anchor can take 510 lbs.; and 3/8-inch anchor can take 530 lbs. (all for a 3/4-inch wallboard).
C-90 Hollow Block (1 1/2-inch wall)
An anchor size 1/8-inch can take 310 lbs; sized 3/16 inch can take 700 lbs, and 1/4 inch can take 1390 lbs. This increases to a whopping 3620 lbs for a 1/2-inch anchor with a 1 1/4-inch embedded depth. Clearly you can have heavier weights on anchors on a C-90 hollow block wall as compared to a gypsum wallboard.
Other Tips
Other issues you should be aware of is the importance of not tightening the toggle bolt too much. A too-tight toggle bolt will end up either damaging the wall or breaking under pressure. Make sure that you tighten it properly but do not go overboard as that will only end up causing damage.
