D TO cut trim incorrectly wastes time, money and resources. Weather you're a cutting simple picture frame trim or intricate crown moulding, there are some general tricks to keep in mind.
"Burn" an inch
Sometimes tape measures don't begin measuring at the very tip. This discrepancy can ruin an expensive piece. Carefully hold your tape measure on the 1" line. Remember to deduct that inch from your measurement.
Use Test Blocks
Especially on long runs or where varying angles are concerned, it makes sense to use test blocks. For exterior roof trim where two angles intersect, use scrap pieces a foot or longer. Mock up the corner and make minor angle adjustments as needed. Once you are satisfied with the angles, tack the block of the NEXT piece of trim. Measure the piece you are working onto the block.
Cut it Big
Again, getting an exact measurement on a long run can be difficult. Take your measurement 1/4" to 1/2" longer. Hold the piece up and check the length. If you can press the ends tight, and the middle bows out excessively, cut the necessary amount.
