Acre

The acre is a unit of area which is comprised of 4,840 square yards. In feet, that equals 43,560 in square footage. The acre was originally a section of land which was one furlong long, or 660 feet, and one chain wide, which was 66 feet. An acre was first measured as the amount of area of land an ox could plow in a single day.

An Acre Doesn’t Have a Specific Shape

An acre is an area of square footage, and therefore can be in any shape. Acres within an area are usually measured in sections of square footage, but if land is owned that is a shape other than square, its acreage is measured by determining how many square feet total are in that shape.

Most Common Acres

The most commonly used acre is the international acre. In the United States, the survey acre is most commonly used. One acre comprises 4,840 square yards or 43,560 square feet, most easily remembered as roughly 44,000 square feet.

For the metric system, the hectare is most often used for the same measuring purpose as the acre is in the US. One acre is approximately forty percent of a hectare.
