Add Foam Molding to Kitchen Cabinets

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Foam molding
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Piece of paper
  • Drop cloth
  • Miter saw
  • Sand paper (fine grit)
  • Foam adhesive
  • Caulking gun
  • Level
  • Paint, stain and painting supplies

Foam molding is a very good choice for installing to your kitchen cabinets as it does not cost a much a regular wood molding but it still looks great.  Decorative molding is a great addition. It will spruce up your kitchen and almost make it look like you have done a kitchen remodel. What is even better, foam molding is super easy to install. This type of molding can be found at your local home improvement store.

Step 1 - Measure your Kitchen Cabinets

Take out your measuring tape and measure the length of your kitchen cabinets. Measure the entire area where you want to cover with foam molding. Note this measurement on your piece of paper. Next, Measure the sections individually. For example, if your cabinets go around a corner, measure the length of one section and then the length of another section separately. Note these measurements on your piece of paper.

Step 2 - Purchase the Molding

Take a trip to your local home improvement center and purchase foam molding. The molding comes in many different styles and colors. You can order the molding as a special order to get different looks on the corners (miter joints and ends).

Step 3 - Cover the Work Area

Cover your work area with a drop cloth. Remove all items from the kitchen countertops and cover the tops as well.

Step 4 - Cut the Molding

Using a miter saw, cut the molding joints (the sections that will join at the corners of your cabinet) on a 45 degree angle. Then smooth the edges of your molding . Take a fine grit sand paper and run it over the edges lightly. Brush off any dust left on the molding.

Step 5 - Install the Molding Over the Cabinets

Using a level, place the molding on the cabinets. Check that the piece is level (you may want to have a helper hold the molding while you check the levelness of the piece). Adhere the molding to the cabinets by using a little foam adhesive applied using a caulking gun. Continue to install the rest of the molding pieces. Add a little caulking to the edges between the miter joints.

Step 6 - Finish the Molding

Lightly sand the joints again to remove any excess adhesive that may have remained from your installation.

Step 7 - Clean the Molding

Using a light non-abrasive cleaner, and rub it over the molding with a damp cloth. Allow the molding to dry completely.

Step 8 - Paint or Stain Molding

Stain or paint the molding so that it matches or contrasts with the colors and the styles of your kitchen. The molding will add just a pretty decorative addition to the kitchen when you have completely painted or stained the surface.
