Advantages of a Second P-Trap for a Garbage Disposal

by DoItYourself Staff

It is highly advisable for people who own a double sink and a garbage disposal system to install 2 p-traps; one for the sink and the other for the garbage disposal. You may wonder why the need for 2 p-traps if 1 p-trap will work fine anyway. The answer and advantages of 2 p-traps are below.

Traps Smell

P-traps have earned its label for its function and that is to trap the sewage system’s nasty smell and toxic gasses (like methane from garbage when they start decomposing) that flows back to the drain. If you have one installed, you can be rest assured that even if you smell gases from your sink, it is not that concentrated enough to cause you any harm.

Traps Gases

Having 2 sinks and 2 drains mean doubling the chance of the gas flow and bad odors. One p-trap is not enough to trap all the gases that exit in the drain. It is important that you install p-trap for each appliance that runs through sewage system. Doubling your p-trap if you have a double sink is highly recommended. Another advantage of doubling your p-trap is that the disposal does not have a straight line to thrust the water back into the other sink. If you have a double sink and just 1 p-trap, it shares the same pipe line of the same level which can cause the water to flow to the other sink when you are washing the other.
