Advantages of Plastic Ceiling Medallions
Ceiling medallions come in two different types, plastic and poured plaster. Traditionally the poured plaster was all that was available and they had many problems, including cracking and breaking, upkeep, weight and cost. In recent years manufacturers have started producing plastic varieties that address all of these problems and they are being more widely used now in construction and home remodeling.
Ceiling medallions are generally used around a light fixture to enhance and decorate the area where it hangs. It makes a statement about the formality and use of the room and creates an elegant atmosphere. The plaster varieties were popular in various architectural periods and were hand crafted by pouring plaster into a mold. These were expensive as they were made one at a time. They were also very fragile and could be totally ruined if they were dropped during installation.
Plastic ceiling medallions have many advantages. First, they are widely available both in stock at home improvement centers in many styles and sizes, by order for special looks and also combined with moldings and other plastic pieces to create a very dramatic, elegant setting at a fraction of the cost. Since they are mass produced they are inexpensive for the homeowner. They are easy to install either with screws or carpenters adhesive, generally you can put one up without any help. Since they are plastic, they won't break or be damaged if dropped and are easy to care for.
