All about the Oak Tree


An oak tree is any tree or shrub of the genus Quercus of the family Fagaceae. Oak is the word for lumber, these trees are used as a major source of hardwood lumber. The wood from this type of tree is tough, durable, and attractively grained.

Some of the main uses of this wood include ship building, construction, flooring, furniture, railroad ties, barrels, and tool handles. The bark from some oak trees has been used in medicine, tanning, and even for dyes. Acorns are the fruit of oak tree, and have been used for a source of hog feed, oil, and food.

Species of Oak Tree

There are as many as 600 species in the oak tree family. They are found mainly in north temperate zones, and also in Polynesia. Some of the more popular oak tree includes the white oak, swamp white oak, scarlet oak, southern red oak, shingle oak, overcup oak, bur oak, and the blackjack oak tree.

They have a variety of different habitats, the swamp white oak, for instance has a habitat of the wetlands where the scarlet oaks habitat is in dry slopes, and the bur oak tree is mainly in stream banks and bottomlands.
