Angling Supplies Every Fisherman Should Have

by DoItYourself Staff

Avid fishermen need a wide selection of angling supplies if they want to catch the fish they enjoy catching. Read on to learn about a few of the angling supplies you need to be a successful fisherman.

Rods or Poles

Every fisherman needs some sort of rod or pole to catch fish. There are several kinds of rods, depending on the type of fishing you are after. Some common types include fly rods, rods for ice fishing and rods for sports fishing.

A fly rod is one that is long and flexible so the fisherman can whip it back and forth over the water to flick the fly to attract a fish, normally a trout or other similar fish. On the other hand, if a fisherman wants to go ice fishing, he needs a more sturdy, short rod because he has to hang it over the edge of the hole in the ice. Sport rods weigh less than either of the other two types. They are made for fish that don’t weigh as much or for faster, sportier breeds.

Reels

The reel is the part that attaches to the rod or pole that holds the line used to catch a fish. There are three basic kinds of reels: spinning, casting, and open reel.

A spinning cast reel has a button the angler pushes to make the line come out of the reel. This gives the angler more control when he casts out his line into the water. It is considered the easiest one, so it is good for beginning fishermen.

An open reel is similar to a regular spinning cast reel but instead of the line being inside the reel, it is on a spool that is open to the air.

A bait-casting reel is the hardest to use. It holds heavier line and is made to catch bigger, heavier fish. The fisherman controls how the line comes out with their thumb.

Fishing Hooks

If you want to be able to catch a fish, you not only need a rod, reel and line, but you also need a fishing hook. There are lots of kinds of fishing hooks shaped lots of ways, but each always has a barb on the end that is used to hold the fish onto the hook. The barb snags the fish’s mouth and won’t let go once it is inside. It can be made of materials such as metal, bone, wire or other items.

Lures or Bait

When you go fishing, you need something to attract the fish and make it want to bite the hook. Lures are something you attach to the hook that accomplishes this purpose. They can be made of different materials such as plastic, metal, cork, wire or even string. They are made with bright colors to make them more noticeable and are sometimes shaped like things a fish would eat, such as a minnow, fly or worm.  If a fisherman doesn’t use a lure in their angling supplies, he likely uses live bait such as insects, worms or smaller fish.
