There comes a point in an antique brass desk lamp life where it needs to be refurbished. In many cases, the refurbish is usually for cosmetic purposes. Being that it is an antique, you will want to pay special attention not to completely take away it charm.
Working With An Antique Brass Desk Lamp Step by Step
Before you start to refurbish the antique brass desk lamp you will want to make sure it is clean. You can do this by simply wiping it off with a damp lint free cotton rag.
Next, you will want to take a brass polish and apply it to the lamp. You can add a few drops of ammonia to make the polish work faster if necessary. Make sure you get in all the smaller areas. Using a toothbrush is often the best way to accomplish this task.
After you have polished the antique brass desk lamp, run a damp cloth over it to get off any residue that was left by the polish; using a combination of warm water and detergent works best.
You will then want to dry the lamp with a lint free towel and continue the following steps with the towel protecting the lamp from your hand when working with it.
Spray the lamp with a spray on varnish that is clear, avoiding the satin varnish. Make sure you allow the varnish sufficient time to dry and not touch it for 12 hours.
You can leave it like this, or you can choose to paint it. If you choose to paint it, make sure you do not paint it while it is cold. Cold weather will not allow the paint to stick to the brass.
