A community of support for those affected by chronic myeloid leukemia

A community of support for those affected by chronic myeloid leukemia Do you or does someone you love suffer from chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)? CML is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow in which the body produces cancerous white blood cells. A CML diagnosis can sometimes leave a person feeling particularly alone, since worldwide, CML has an incidence of only 1 to 2 cases per 100,000 people per year.

When David Wolovitz was diagnosed with CML 9 years ago, he was frightened of the potential outcome of the disease, and looked for as much information as he could find on this rare cancer. Like many other people with CML, Wolovitz felt alone and did not know where to turn to for help and support. Wolovitz has since joined CMLEarth.com, an online community that enables people with CML to make connections to people who share a common background, interests or geography. Research shows that networking is important for people like Wolovitz with rare cancers who are looking to connect with people who have had similar experiences.

"After years living with CML, I still feel a need to connect with others who have experienced a similar diagnosis," says Wolovitz. "It was amazing to me to realize how many people are touched by this disease. I look to others to provide me with continued hope and encouragement."

Through CMLEarth.com, Wolovitz is able to make connections with other CML patients around the world and express his support for other patients. The site also enables patients to contact patient groups for additional support and information. This service is sponsored by Novartis Oncology, a global leader in CML therapies.

"Being a member of CMLEarth.com has connected me with fellow patients and inspired me to share my story, just like so many other people with CML are doing around the world. I feel truly connected to the CML community," says Wolovitz.
