Are Wood Garage Shelves Right For You?


Installing wood garage shelves is a great way to take care of your storage needs. Wood garage shelves come in many forms from open shelving units to closed-in cabinets. Although they are not right for everyone, wood shelves allow for freedom in design and customization.

What Type of Garage Do You Have? 

Whether wood garage shelves are right for you can depend greatly on the type of garage you currently have. Is your garage sealed-off and climate controlled? Does its humidity and temperature vary greatly? Climate conditions can drastically affect wood shelves by warping, rotting, and shrinking wood.

Strength vs. Expense

Hardwood makes the best shelving material because its strength. Wood shelves have a tendency to sag towards the middle when heavy items are places on them for long period of time. Hardwood, and 3/4 in. plywood, will stay straight longer. However, the drawback to hardwood is that it is more expensive than a softwood, like pine.

Design and Customization Options

Your do-it-yourself skill level is an important factor to consider when deciding whether to install the shelves yourself. However, as long as you have the time and are willing to learn how to both use basic tools and do various woodworking techniques, using wood gives you unlimited options.
