Asphalt Driveway Repair: How to Fill Cracks
what you'll need
- Asphalt repair kit
- Vacuum cleaner
- Pressure hose washer
- Caulking gun
Asphalt driveway repair requires the correct materials for a long lasting restoration. Knowing the correct way to repair a crack in your own driveway will prevent the crack from reappearing or needing an entire resurface.
Step 1 – Assess
First, assess how deep the cracked area is. If it is too deep, you will need to have a professional repair it to stop it from coming back. If the crack is less than a 1/2 inch deep (test by poking a wooden twig into it), you can repair it with asphalt repairing tar.
Step 2 – Clean
Clean the crack thoroughly with a power hose and pressure wash the entire cracked area. Get rid of any extraneous and loose debris. You can use a vacuum cleaner to get rid of grit from the crack.
Step 3 – Repair
Use the caulking gun and the repair kit to inject the crack with asphalt. The crack should be injected until the asphalt repairing filler reaches the top edge. You can use firm grit sand paper to press down and get a match for the rest of the asphalt, so that the crack does not stand out too much. Level it and texture it for a good match.
