Assembling A Folding Shelf Step-by-Step
A folding shelf can save you a lot of space while providing extra storage. You can build one easily following these instructions:
Step 1: Locate Studs
Locate the studs in the wall. The brackets need to be very secure. Do not use expansion bolts or just drywall screws.
Step 2: Mark Level Line
Mark the level of the shelf itself, using a long float or laser level. Be sure to check on the height you want your shelf at.
Step 3: Mount Hinge Brackets
Place one of the hinge brackets up onto the level line, and with a pencil, mark out the screw holes that will go into the studs. Install the first folding hinge bracket. Pre-drill the holes with a 1/8-inch bit and then install the bracket with solid screws that are long enough to bite into the stud at least 3/4 inch.
Using your level, attach the second bracket in the same fashion, checking to make sure they are aligned correctly. If the brackets are out of level by more that 1/16 inch in 4 feet, you will run into problems. Mark twice, drill once!
Step 4: Attach Shelf
Now you can attach the shelf to the wall-mounted bracket, using 3/8-inch wood screws installed into pre-drilled holes. It is a good idea to put in a safety catch, so that when the shelf is in the folded position, it won't be accidentally pulled down.
