An assessment is a charge which is leveled on the homeowner due to a change or improvement that is made within a town, city or other municipal jurisdiction. The homeowner will be given the assessment by the town or municipality when such an improvement is made.
The homeowner has very little say as to whether or not he wants or approves the improvement made to the town of municipality, except through the process of voting on the issue, if it does come up for a vote, or lobbying through the proper channels to change the improvement of the town or municipality before the fact, and before the assessment is levied on the homeowner.
Assessment Types
Assessments might be made as if localized work is done at the area close to the house, such as street of sewer improvement, planting of trees, or establishing a park or recreational area nearby. Assessments are looked at as something which is paid for by the homeowners because it improves the neighborhood and therefore will help raise the property values.
