If you ever admired car show room floors and wish you could have one like it in your garage, you should know that you can if you use epoxy paint. Epoxy paint is used on concrete to give a shiny, stain resistant coat. You can find colored epoxy paint (which is a hardener and resin combined) or you can use it with epoxy paint chips to create a chip floor.
It should be noted that this whole project takes a few days to complete, so make sure that you have enough time to complete the whole project.
Step 1 - Test Floor
Not all concrete floors should have an epoxy solution on them, so it is best to test your floor beforehand to know if you can or cannot use epoxy. If the floor has a new slab of concrete you should wait two months before using epoxy on it. If it has been treated with a concrete sealer (you can test it by placing water on it and if it beads on top, you know it has been used before), you should not use epoxy. If it has been painted before, make sure you remove any left over.
For the test you will need to wet a small area of the floor and cover it up for a full 24 hours. If the floor is 100% dry the next day, you can go ahead with the project. If it is not dry, you will need to forgo the entire project.
Step 2 - Prepare
You should clean your floor and let it dry a full 24 hours. Make sure to remove oil stains and any grease that is on it. You will need to use a brush give it a good scrubbing. You will also need to vacuum and sweep. After that you should give the whole driveway and garage a good rinse. Keep rinsing it for about 15-20 minutes. You should allow it to dry for 24 hours.
Now you can use the etching solution on it, after you fill in any cracks on the floor. You should also apply a coat of clear epoxy paint and a second coat on the third day.
Step 3 - Apply Epoxy Paint
On the fourth day you can start painting the floor with epoxy paint. Make sure to use masking tape on areas you do not want to paint. Apply the epoxy paint evenly on the floor with a paint roller.
Step 4 - Apply Paint Chips
Once you have covered the floor with epoxy paint, you should start quickly applying the paint chips. It is up to you if you want to go light or heavy on them. Just try to apply them evenly and quickly. Allow them to dry.
Step 5 - Apply Top Clear Coat of Epoxy Paint
After the floor dries, sweep the floor and then apply the final coat of epoxy.
Once you are done with that, you can begin to clean the tools used with vinegar. The vinegar will remove the epoxy thoroughly and safely from the tools that were used. After that, you are completely done.
