An awning is a type of window that was largely used in earlier years. The difference between this window and a more recent window is the way the window sash swings. The window swings outward rather than up or down. They were very popular before air conditioning came about.
Awnings Were Popular in the Earlier Years
For the most part, you will find examples of awnings in older schools and manufacturing plants. These windows usually opened by a crank or pull chain. The larger examples of awning windows used a pull chain due to the fact that they were so tall. The purpose of these awning windows was to create a cross current to cool the area.
Homes in the ‘40’s through the ‘60’s also utilized awnings. These were typically hinged at the top then had a hand crank to open them up to let air flow through. These were phased out as air conditioners were introduced and began to be replaced in older homes. The awnings were replaced with double hung windows.
