The craft of bag making is an enjoyable project that is simple to learn at home, and the result can be a unique and compliment-bringing accessory. Start with this simple pattern and bring your own unique style when adding your creative embellishments.
Step 1: Measure and Cut Fabric
You will need 1/2 yard each of fabric for the exterior and the bag lining. These can be two contrasting colors or patterns. It is recommended to start with a cotton fabric because it is one of the easiest types to work with. Cut 2 squares of the exterior fabric that are 10 1/2 inches total, and cut 2 more of the same size for the lining fabric. Then cut 2 strips of your choice of fabric that are 2 1/2 inches wide for the bag strap. The length of the strap is up to you, but be sure to add an extra 2 1/2 inches at each end for sewing allowance.
Step 2: Pin and Sew
Use straight pins to attach the 2 pieces of exterior fabric on three sides, right sides together. Do the same with your squares of lining fabric. Sew the three sides of each piece together using overlapping stitches, also known as back-stitching, and then remove the pins. Place your lining inside the exterior and pin in place around the top edge; you should see the seams of each on both the outside and inside. Sew 1/4 inch entirely around the top of your bag; leave a 3 inch opening to allow for turning your bag right side out. Press your lining inside your bag and smooth it with a clothes iron if needed.
Step 3: Make Your Bag Strap
Fold the lengths of strap fabric longways and pin together. Sew 1/4 inch along this edge using the same back-stitching method, and then attach a safety pin to one corner of one end of the strap. Turn your strap right side out by working the pin through the length of the strap, then remove the safety pin when finished. If you are making a bag with a second strap, repeat the same process.
Step 4: Attach it All Together
Fold your strap(s) 1/4 under at each end and press this crease with your iron. Attach the ends to the inside of your bag, about 1 inch down from the top edge at opposite ends. Back-stitch around the edge of your bag, 1 inch down, so that the strap ends are caught and secured in place. Add an additional row of stitches around the top edge and catch the strap ends with these as well.
Step 5: Add Embellishments
These decorations are limited only by your imagination. Options include sequin decals, patches, lace, buttons, charms, fringe, beads, and any other variety of items. Another option is to stitch on additional pieces of fabric to create a patchwork look, and you can also piece the exterior of your bag together from more than one section of fabric. Sizes of these can vary, as long as the measurements still add up to 10 1/2 inches total.
