Ball Canning Jar
You remember how your grandmother always had a Ball canning jar in her cupboard and usually several others to go with it? With our homes as busy as they are today, you are more likely to see a Ball canning jar at a restaurant serving cola as a nostalgic decoration than in anyone’s cupboards full of jelly.
The Ball canning jar that your grandmother used is the same one used today, for those of us who still like to can our fruits and vegetables.
Why use a Ball Canning Jar?
The Ball canning jar was more about the lid than the jar. The lid would seal shut with a tight vacuum seal and then the screw lid secured around it would hold the lid in place. Metal was not an option as it would taint the food and plastic would melt away as the boiling hot canning products were placed inside. The glass Ball canning jar was the obvious option and has worked well for centuries.
