Barrel Tile Installation

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Barrel tiles
  • Copper nails
  • Felt rolls
  • Copper flashing tiles
  • Water barrier sheets
  • Cement tile mortar
  • Roofing nails (3/8 inch)

Barrel tile installation is not for the faint of heart, as working on the roof coupled with complicated installation procedures may prove difficult for the average person. But with the right tools and a few simple tips, barrel tile installation can be made easy and hassle free.

Step 1 – Preparation

Lay down the rolls of felt over the roof and secure on all overlapping sections with roofing nails. Secure the water barrier sheets over the felt, making sure that the adhesive side makes full contact with the felt. It would be best to put copper flashing tiles around the various openings of the roof and secure using roofing nails.

Step 2 – Install Barrel Tiles

Lay the tiles on the roof according to the design and specification of your barrel tiles. Secure a cooper nail to the area you wish to start and nail each tile depending on the type of placement you prefer. Barrel tiles will usually require two or three nails to be fully secured and should be facing down the roof. Apply cement tile mortar between the overlapping surfaces of the tile. Let dry.

Barrel tile installation requires a few carpentry skills to properly undertake it. You may use a circular saw or angle grinder to cut barrel tiles to the desired size and shape.
