Condensation

Many people find that their basements have condensation on the walls. The only way to prevent water damage is to figure out whether this is from condensation build up or from a leak in your foundation wall. Luckily, there is one simple solution to figuring this out.

  • Step 1: Wipe the condensation from the wall so it is completely dry.
  • Step 2: Cut out a piece of tin foil and duct tape it to the spot on the wall. Make sure every side is completely covered in tape and the tin foil is not ripped.
  • Step 3: Leave the tin foil on untouched for 24 hours and examine it.

If the tin foil is wet on the inside the leak is in the wall, if it is on the outside it is a buildup of condensation.

How to Fix Condensation in Your Basement

If the leak is in the foundation you will need to take measures towards fixing the walls. Allowing the leak to continue can ruin your foundation over time. If it is condensation you may want to consider buying a dehumidifier. Place it in your basement and let it run continuously to remove water from the air.
