In order to keep your floors from chipping and prevent damage, it is necessary for you to apply some basement floor sealer to protect it. Floor sealer is used to protect and cure concrete or floor surfaces. When the floor installation is finished, a floor sealer is used to protect the surface of your floor from moisture or water which can cause damage. It is also used to protect the floor from stains and other forms of dirt which helps you with the cleaning process. A basement floor sealer is also used to enhance the look and the color of your basement floor, making it more vibrant. There are different kinds of floor sealers to choose from such as Acrylic, Urethane, Epoxy and Penetrating basement floor sealers.

1. Acrylic Sealers

An acrylic sealer is a water-based sealer. This is popularly used for curing the floor. It can also be used as a moderate protective layer. Acrylic sealers are the most affordable types of sealers and they are the easiest to apply on your floor. Acrylic sealers are also safe since they are water based and do not give off toxic chemicals that may harm the health of your loved ones. An acrylic sealer is also odorless, so you will not have to worry about strong smells. Solvent-based sealers are toxic and they produce a very strong odor, which is why people who use them are required to wear protective masks and have proper ventilation. You will not have to worry about this with acrylic sealers.

2. Urethane Sealers

Urethane sealers are used for protection when coated on decorative surfaces of your floor. It enhances the color and shine of the floor. Urethane sealers are simple and easy to use, and they help make your basement floor much more durable. These sealers, however, are toxic and can harm your health. When using Urethane sealers, it is advised that you are equipped with a protective mask. Make sure also that windows to the outside are open to provide proper ventilation. This must be observed when you apply the Urethane sealer as well as when it is drying.

3. Epoxy Sealers

An Epoxy sealer is composed of a system that comes in two steps. This kind of sealer is more difficult to apply onto your floor. If you are going to attempt to apply this sealer by yourself, it is advised that you purchase the water-based Epoxy sealers. These sealers set at a slower time and they are non-toxic which will keep you safe.

4. Penetrating Sealers

These are also called Densifiers. Penetrating sealers are used when you want to inhibit the moisture or water from your basement from seeping through the surface of your basement floor. If your basement floor is not equipped with a vapor barrier underneath the concrete it was built on, you will need to apply a coat or two of a Penetrating sealer to prevent damage from moisture.
