Basement Windows

by DoItYourself Staff

If your basement windows are wood they will rot or warp over time. Metal basement windows tend to leak and rust. Since basement windows are close to the damp ground.

Types of basement windows

• Awning basement windows are hinged and open out using a crank handle with screens on the outside of the house.
• Hopper basement windows are hinged at the bottom of the window and open to the inside of the basement. They also have screens on the outside of the house.
• Horizontal slider basement windows open side to side with screens on either the inside or the outside of the house.

When choosing basement windows keep in mind that hinged windows are better at stopping drafts and reducing water leakage.  Hinged basement windows have a tighter seal because the window is pressed against the window frame when it is closed.
