Basic Functions of a Wireless Home Security Camera

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Security camera
  • Transmitter
  • Base unit
  • Receiver

A home security camera can be an important component of a security system that protects your private residence from burglars. You can install multiple security cameras in conjunction with an alarm system to keep the home monitored at all times.

Step 1 – Connecting the Camera to the Base Unit

You need a base unit to connect the camera to its wireless unit, and this is done through a radio signal. Home security cameras work in a similar way to normal TV sets. You need to plug in the base unit to the electric power supply. If you are installing more than one camera, put a 9V battery in each camera. The monitor and recording equipment runs on batteries or electric power according to the brand being used. Wireless security cameras today are able to produce a clearer image because they make use of more sophisticated Bluetooth technology.

Step 2 – Transmitting the Video Footage

Wireless home security cameras generally have a built-in transmitter and they transmit the video footage to the receiver via a signal that closely resembles a radio signal. Make sure you adjust the transmitter and the receiver to the same frequency in order to obtain a clear video footage from the camera. You can connect the receiver to a television, VCR, a computer or DVD recorder.

Step 3 – Providing Electric or Battery Power

Keep in mind that wireless home security cameras require a lot of power, especially the receiver and the transmitter. Not all cameras need the same power; some require batteries and others need a direct AC adapter which must be connected into an electrical socket. Those cameras which run on batteries can keep on working even when the electric power in your home is cut off.

Step 4 – Selecting Your Wireless Home Security Camera

Some security cameras may have some additional functions that other cameras do not have. For example, not all cameras have a programmable duress signal, infrared vision, motion-activated recording and night vision. You have to check also the strength of the signal and the distance there is between the transmitter and the receiver. If you place the receiver too far from the transmitter, you will consequently get an unclear and weak signal.

Step 5 – Installing the Cameras With No Wiring

The greatest advantage of wireless cameras is that there is no wiring needed for the cameras to function properly. For this same reason, you can install a wireless camera anywhere around the household.

Wireless security cameras have another advantage. Since the cameras are wireless, burglars are not able to distinguish the difference between an active camera and a disconnected one. Several people still cannot afford to purchase a wireless home security camera, but they always install a fake one and still keep burglars and other criminals away from the homes. When wireless home security cameras were still not available, the lack of wiring would tell a burglar that the camera and alarm system is not connected. Nowadays, thanks to these innovative wireless home security cameras, burglars must be very cautious when they break into a house.
