Bathtub Resurfacing Time and Cost

by DoItYourself Staff

Bathtub resurfacing can be a do-it-yourself job or one that you leave to professionals. There are several variances in time and cost. A lot also depends upon what type bathtub you wish to resurface.

Type of Tub

If you have one of the newer fiber glass or acrylic tubs and you wish to resurface it you can save a lot of money by doing it yourself. Professional refinishing is very expensive and usually recommended for cast iron tubs that are expensive to replace or are antique.

A bathtub resurfacing kit can be purchased at any home improvement big box store for under $100. They come complete with all the materials you will need and complete instructions. A project like this will take a day to do and usually you need to allow at least one day for the surface to completely set up. Some kits require a longer time.

Professional Resurfacing

You can get your cast iron tub resurfaced for less than it would cost to replace it but it is an expensive project. In most areas it will be at least $1500. It will take about half a day and its best done in weather when you can open windows due to the fumes. It will be at least 24 hours before you can use it. You will also need to be careful how you clean it and do it only per installers recommendations.
