Anyone who has ever wanted a pet has considered a dog, a cat, maybe a bird or a hamster, but rarely a bearded dragon. But there are lots of reptiles that make perfect pets, like the bearded dragon. The bearded dragon makes a perfect pet for most people because unlike most domesticated animals, such as dogs and cats, a bearded dragon is a relatively low maintenance pet and it's easy to care for.
So exactly what is a bearded dragon?
A bearded dragon is a small lizard like animal that usually matures to be about 18-22 inches in length by the time it reaches two years of age. The typical lifespan is somewhere between four and ten years.
This reptile's native homeland is Australia, but most of the bearded dragons in America have never lived in Australia because they are bred in captivity in the States.
The "bearded" dragon really gets his name from the tiny spikes just under his chin that resemble a beard. Often if a bearded dragon feels frightened or threatened, those little spikes will stand up.
Bearded dragons are easy to tame and quite affectionate with their owners.
What's required for the care of a bearded dragon?
To care for a bearded dragon, remember they like moist, humid areas. Special lights can help them "sunbathe," a shallow water dish for drinking is great, and they also like to be misted from time to time. It's important to avoid wood shavings; instead paper towels or a small piece of indoor carpeting is ideal to line the bottom of their habitat.
A healthy well balanced diet consists of a variety of small insects like crickets, greens, and vegetables. Heat is vital to digestion. It's ideal to feed them in the morning when the habitat is warm, and in the evening before bedtime.
So the next time you or someone you know is pondering about a pet, think of the bearded dragon. You'll be glad you did!
