For those who are more experienced or adventurous, the recipes can be modified in order to feature new beer ingredients and combinations. Belgian beer is characterized as stronger in flavor and alcoholic content than other types of beer and is one of the most popular varieties to brew at home. It generally takes about 3 weeks to allow a batch of beer to brew.
Step 1 - Select a Beer and Purchase Equipment
Because each type of beer requires a slightly different brewing process, you'll need to decide on which type of Belgian beer you'll make at home before you can begin. Look up recipes for that beer or purchase a kit that contains the exact portions of the ingredients that you'll need. Most people find that purchasing a kit is a good strategy for the beginning stages of home brewing.
Step 2 - Sanitize the Equipment
It's crucial that you properly sanitize all of the equipment that you're planning to use. This will be necessary because any bacteria that exist on the equipment before you begin will be allowed to grow and repopulate the mixture. While this may not end up being dangerous to drink, it will nonetheless completely ruin the taste and consistency of any beer that you try to make.
Mix up a batch of 1 part bleach and 9 parts water. Treat all of the equipment pieces that you'll use with this solution, rinse them off with water, then allow them to dry off in a clean area. Wash the beer bottles in the dishwasher or by hand.
Step 3 - Heat and Cool the Wort
The wort is the mixture of the ingredients that will ultimately become the beer. Follow the specific instructions for your particular beer to add the ingredients together. You'll need to heat the wort to a specific temperature in the brewpot. Before you begin, prepare a cold water bath so that you can cool the wort to below 80 degrees as soon as it's reached the target temperature.
Step 4 - Ferment the Beer
Strain off the wort so that only the liquid fills up the fermenting pot. Add the yeast according to the instructions for the beer. Stop up the fermenting pot so that it's airtight and include the thermometer. Be prepared to check on the beer periodically throughout the brewing process to be sure that it's maintaining an even temperature.
Step 5 - Bottle the Beer
Transfer the fermenting beer to the bottling bucket and then siphon the beer into the bottles once the brewing process has completed.
