The Benefits of Halogen Light Bulbs

by Dave Donovan

With so much emphasis being placed on “going green” these days, lighting is one of the most commonly talked about areas of concern. Fluorescent lights are becoming more and more popular as their prices are slowly marked down, and eventually, the good old incandescent bulb will probably go the way of the vinyl record. But what about halogen light bulbs?

While not as cost-effective as fluorescent lights, halogen light bulbs do have their place in the world. Here, we take a look at some of the benefits offered by halogen light bulbs.

Longer Life – Halogen light bulbs are made using a much stronger glass than that used to make regular incandescent light bulbs. Halogen requires a stronger glass because its filament burns much hotter than a regular incandescent but because the interior bulb environment is carefully controlled; the bulb lasts longer than a traditional bulb.

Brighter Illumination – Halogen light bulbs, because they burn so hot, are one of the brightest bulbs available.

Efficient – Efficiency and halogens are rarely mentioned in the same sentence, but in fact, halogens are an efficient way of lighting a large area. It’s an even more energy efficient choice if you use Halogen IR-type bulbs. This is a specially-made halogen bulb that features a filter that reflects infrared light. A 60-watt halogen IR bulb can produce illumination comparable to a 90-watt traditional halogen or a 120-watt incandescent.

Dimmable – Halogen lights, unlike most fluorescent energy-saving light bulbs, are dimmable. This allows you the freedom to create various moods and environments not possible with fluorescent lighting.

Compact Size – Halogens come in a variety of sizes and shapes which make them a great choice for track, recessed, outside and security lighting.

While this article proves that halogen light bulbs are indeed a good choice for a variety of lighting solutions, it should be stated that free-standing, halogen lamps are not recommended. These tall lamps are easily knocked over and as such pose a very high fire risk, especially when they are placed near curtains or other flammable materials.
