Benefits of a Fiberglass Kayak

by DoItYourself Staff

There are 2 major types of kayaks being used nowadays – the plastic kayak and the fiberglass kayak. There are many benefits of having a fiberglass kayak rather than a kayak made of plastic.

Fiberglass Kayaks are Lighter

Fiberglass kayaks weigh less than their plastic counterparts. This makes loading and unloading a fiberglass kayak easier for transport. A lighter kayak has more paddling efficiency making it an ideal kayak type to use on kayak racing and long-distance paddling.

Fiberglass Kayaks are Faster

Fiberglass kayaks, being lightweight, are faster and more paddle efficient compared to kayaks that are made of plastic. Fiberglass kayak also have gel-coated hulls that are perfectly smooth, offering less resistance or drag to water making fiberglass kayaks faster than plastic kayaks.

Stores Better

Fiberglass kayaks, as long as it is not exposed in extreme heat and pressure for a long time, stores up to three or four months better and longer than plastic kayaks.

Although pure fiberglass kayaks are less durable compared to plastic kayaks, recent technologies in kayak manufacturing allows for Kevlar composites to be added to fiberglass making a fiberglass-kevlar kayak not only lighter but also more durable compared to plastic kayaks.
