Best Places to Store Your Emergency Kit

by DoItYourself Staff

Emergency kits and safety supplies should always be stored where all family members can reach them easily and quickly. For some families this may mean a shelf in the garage or pantry. However, families with small children will need to store the kits where young children can't reach them so the kit remains intact and untampered with. If you have sensitive documents, money, ID and other items in the kit, it's a good idea to store it in secure area away from rooms where servicemen, neighbors, friends and people spend a lot of time. Pick a secure location in your bedroom or office.

Wherever you do decide to store your kit make sure everyone knows its location. It's not a good idea to lock the kit up because in an emergency keys may become lost or inaccessible. Keep the kit off of the floor, in a cool, dry place so the contents aren't ruined by extreme temperatures or weather. If you spend a lot of time in your car, you may want to keep an emergency kit in the trunk and include road emergency supplies like flares and a reflective traffic vest and tire patch/plug supplies.

Some popular places to keep emergency kits:

  • On top of the refridgerator
  • In the front hall closet
  • On a hook or shelf in the garage
  • In a car trunk
  • In the master bedroom closet
  • In a storage bench in an entryway
  • Under a home office desk
