Bird pet food is mostly seed, and while that’s a good diet, it’s boring. Birds need treats, just like any other person or animals. You can make your own quite easily. It doesn’t take long. Before you start, it’s important to be aware of what you shouldn’t feed your pet birds. Parrots should not have peanuts, and for all birds make sure you avoid fava and navy beans, as well as lima beans if they’ve sprouted, along with avocados, chocolate, rhubarb, and anything containing alcohol or caffeine.

Step 1 - What Type of Treat?

There’s no single type of bird pet food treat that’s right for all birds. So much is going to depend on your bird’s diet. If it naturally has a low-far diet then you shouldn’t be giving it high fat foods. Similarly, if it normally eats high fat foods, then low fat treats won’t work well.

If you’re not sure what types of food will work as pet treats for your breed of bird, research online or in books. You can also talk to your veterinarian, who’ll be able to offer ideal advice.

Step 2 - See what Works

Once you have a good idea what’s appropriate for your bird, try it with small amounts of different items, such as fruit or cooked vegetables (allow them to cool first). Take care to wash everything well before you feed it to your bird. This will remove any pesticides from growing. If you try your bird with strawberries don’t buy those that have been commercially grown as they’ll be too laden with pesticides. Use only those from your own garden or organic strawberries.

Step 3 - Nuts And Seeds

You shouldn’t feed too many nuts or seeds as a bird pet food treat. Your bird will have plenty of these in its regular diet, and an excess isn’t good for it. Make sure, too, that you don’t feed anything that’s naturally high in salt or in sugar. Even if your bird has a high far diet, you shouldn’t put much fat into the treats. Be moderate in everything.

Step 4 - What’s Good

If your bird likes fruit then give it a small fruit salad or perhaps a green salad. That might seem odd, but it does bring variety to the diet. Finding a balance in bird pet food is the deal trick. Once you’ve established what’s good for your bird and experimented you’ll be able to come up with regular small treats.

Step 5 - A Simple Treat

There’s one treat that’s suitable for most birds, and which is good for them. You simply mix 3 eggs, including the shells, with cooked vegetables, applesauce, fruit, and cornmeal. When it’s fully mixed, bake for 20 minutes and allow to cool before feeding in small amounts to your bird. You can add the usual commercial pellet alongside this for a complete meal. This will give a good mix and ample nutrition for your bird. Don’t feed the treats all the time.
