Boiled Chicken

by DoItYourself Staff

Boiled chicken is chicken that has been prepared in boiling water or broth.

How to boil chicken

It is imperative to properly boil chicken not only for flavor’s sake, but also for health reasons. Boiled chicken should be cooked – whether in water or broth – until white meat is completely white throughout. Chicken should be brought to a hard boil and then reduced to a gentle, rolling boil. A whole chicken can take up to 90 minutes to properly cook. The time involved for boiled chicken pieces is considerably less.

Uses for boiled chicken

The uses for boiled chicken in recipes are almost endless. Some of the most common reasons to boil chicken include:

  • Creating soup – One of the easiest ways to make soup and soup stock is to start with boiled chicken. This can be done with a whole chicken or pre-cut chicken pieces. For a broth, boil chicken with spices, such as salt and pepper. To create a one-pot soup, use chicken that’s pre-cut with spices and desired vegetables.
  • Creating the meat portion of other dishes – Boiled chicken can be created for use in other dishes and prepared ahead and frozen. The broth can be set aside for use in other dishes, as well.
  • Making salads – Boiled chicken is the standard ingredient in chicken salad.
