by DoItYourself Staff

If you are hearing a high pitched noise or are not stopping as fast as you should when you brake, you may need some brake repair instructions. Even though repairing your brakes at a repair shop, there are several things you can do at home to save on repair costs. It is important to note however, that not all vehicles are made the same and you should have a repair manual for your specific vehicle when fixing any of these diagnosed problems.

Problem #1: Brakes Pull Toward One Side

If your car seems to be pulling toward one side, you might have brakes that are not adjusted properly. Check the adjustments on both sides to make sure that they are equal. Though you may notice this problem when using your breaks, it could stem from a different part of your vehicle, such as you wheel cylinder or caliper, linings and loose wheel bearings.

Problem #2: Brakes Grab or Stick

This problem can be caused by product buildup of brake fluid, oil or grease. Find the buildup and eliminate it with de-greaser and replace the linings. The problem could also be caused by bad drums or rotors that may need to be resurfaced. The rotors may have to be resurfaced if you are hearing brake "chatter" as well.

Problem #3: Low Brake Fluid

Check your brake fluid. If it is low, refill it. You should also check your brake system to make sure there are no leaks, as they can be hazard. If you find a leak, replace the part. Do not drive your vehicle until you have finished the repairs.

Problem #4: Squeaking or Squealing

Squeaking or squealing brakes can be caused by rough vibrations between the caliper and the disc pads. Take off the old pads and install new ones. Remember to apply grease to the back of the pads to help reduce noise. Do this as soon as you can after the squealing starts. Waiting could result in expensive repairs.

Problem #5: Low Brake Pedal

If your drum brakes or shoe adjusters are not working properly, you can fix this by adjusting them. You may also need to replace or clean them if the linings are worn out.

Problem #6: Brakes Sound as if They are Dragging

If it sounds as if you are dragging your breaks or if you are having a pull on your steering, you could have broken retracting springs on your drum brakes. It can also be caused by a corroded or jammed piston or a floating caliper. Discover where the problem is coming from and replace the part.

Problem #7: Petal Pushes to the Floor

If you petal has sunk to the floor, you may need to change your master cylinder. There may also be a leak in the hydraulic system that will not allow the brakes to hold any pressure. You should fix this immediately. Do not drive the vehicle until the repair has been made.

These are a few of the problems that may cause your brakes to fail. Though most fixes should be done by professionals, these things are simple things or problems that you will be able to fix.
