Brick Landscape Edging Design Ideas

by DoItYourself Staff

Among the contemporary landscaping edging options, brick landscape edging is the most affordable and versatile option. When choosing a material to create borders for your landscape, the sturdiness of the edging material and its aesthetic appeal should be the prime considerations. Landscapes that are constantly exposed to extreme weather patterns or those with an acidic soil-base or slow-draining areas tend to wear-out the edging materials. This is why brick landscape edging is becoming increasingly popular. For starters, brick is a more durable material. It can easily outlast wood or metal. In terms of temperature and weather resistance, brick edgings offer better performance than most synthetic (acrylic) edging options.

Brick Landscape Edging Designs

The biggest advantage of edging with bricks is the overall, ease-of-installation. You can create various patterns using landscape bricks. The edging can be modified to suit various, size or shaping demands put forth by a garden or sidewalk. The following options should be considered when designing a brick landscape edging.

Design Idea 1 - Traditional Edging

This is the simplest form of brick edging and is often called paving-stone edging. These borders are created with the conventional, red bricks. The height and width of such borders is minimal. More than the aesthetic aspect, basic brick edging is used to define borders in the home’s external landscape. This border is created by placing the bricks in a flat position—horizontal placement wherein the bricks are installed along their length. This is also called the stepping-stone brick edging. It is ideally suited for homeowners who have basic brick-working skills or those who are hard-pressed for time.

This form of brick edging has a more functional aspect. It helps to contain the soil-bed in gardens wherein the lose top-surface of the soil tends to spill over the surrounding area. However, this isn’t the ideal choice if you want to make fashionable statement with your landscaping. Traditional brick edging is recommended if you have a garden with high density of bright, colored flowers. The rather plain (neutral) background of such edgings helps to create a contrast and balance the visual appeal of the exteriors.

Design Idea 2 - Curved and Angled Edgings

The 90-degree angles of traditional edging can be boring. An easy way to boost the style-quotient of your exteriors is adding certain angles to the edging layout. Curved brick landscape edging is easy-to-execute. The circled edges can be modified into various shapes. These include semi-circle edgings or those with multiple, circular loops. Another option is to elongate the curve of the brick border and use it as a circumference around the entire garden or the patio. The curvy, border look is essentially a decorative choice and adds little to the functional aspect of the garden border. The curved edging oozes a sculpted appearance though the process of creating a curve is an undemanding one.

If the curved appearance doesn’t excite you, more designs can be explored. You can establish distinct, angled patterns to augment the appearance of you exteriors. You can create a pattern wherein small sections of angled edgings protrude from an otherwise straight brick layering arrangement. You can direct these angled edgings towards a showpiece like a garden fountain. You can also maneuver these angled edgings in the form of a directional edging—leading towards the main entrance.

Design Idea 3 - Brick Façade Edging

In terms of brick-working skills involved, this option is perhaps the most tedious. However, this also the most eye-catching option. Here, a small wall-like structure or a façade is used instead of the traditional one or two-brick border. The walled appearance helps to create a more defined look in the landscape, helping to establish defined parameters. Each of these walled borders offer more surface area in the form of a decorative option. You can embellish them with flowering pots. The color of the bricks can be chosen to complement the shade of the surrounding flowers.
