Build Your Own Cabinet Door Storage

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Scrap pieces of 3/4-inch plywood
  • Small metal brackets
  • Wood screws, 1/2-inch
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Finish nailer
  • 1-inch finish nails
  • Wood glue
  • Sand paper
  • Wood block
  • Screwdriver
  • Table saw

One way to win the battle of storage in the kitchen is with cabinet door storage. By simply placing a shelf on the inside of a cabinet door you are adding quality storage space for small items. Things like spices, sponges, cans and small utensils can be stored on the cabinet door. Building your own cabinet door storage is a very easy do it yourself project that can be done with some simple tools and scrap pieces of plywood.

Step 1: Remove Cabinet Door

Use your screwdriver and remove the cabinet door from the cabinet face. Set aside the screws for when you reinstall the door. A cup will do great. Keep them beside the actual cabinet for ease of finding them later.

Step 2: Cut Wood Pieces

For this easy project you will only need to have four pieces of plywood. You are going to cut out two sides, a bottom and a front. Cut the front piece first. Place the tape measure on your cabinet door 1 1/2 inches from the bottom. Measure the door and find the middle. Mark the middle at the 1 1/2-inch mark.

Cut a piece of plywood that is 10 inches long and 3 inches high. This going to act as the front of your shelf. Cut two more pieces that are 2 inches long and 3 inches high. Finally, cut out one more piece that is 10 inches long and 3 inches wide for the bottom.

Step 3: Sand All Pieces

Place the plywood pieces on a flat work area and sand them with a piece of sand paper wrapped around a wooden block. Using an electric sander will just take too much off. All you are trying to do is smooth out the plywood.

Step 4: Assemble Shelf Pieces

Starting with the front and the bottom of the shelf, assemble the plywood pieces. Line the edge of the front piece with wood glue and set onto the bottom. Secure with the finish nailer. Do the same with the two sides. Set aside for the glue to dry. Wipe off any excess.

Step 5: Attach to Cabinet Door

Once the glue on the shelf has finished drying you can then attach it to the shelf. Attach the two small metal brackets to the edge of each side that is open. Set the shelf, with the open side towards the cabinet door. Set the bottom of the shelf on the mark you made that is 1 1/2 inches from bottom edge. Set the middle of the shelf on the middle mark on the door. Attach with the 1/2-inch wood screws into the metal brackets.

Step 6: Re-install Cabinet Door

Now that the cabinet door storage is completed you can re-install the cabinet door to the cabinet face with the screws that you used previously. Set your items in the shelf and you now have some great cabinet door storage.
