Building A Basement Bar With A Small Budget

by DoItYourself Staff

A basement bar can be a fantastic addition, making the basement more usable and encouraging the use of that space for entertaining.  The cost can be kept low by using recycled and low-cost materials whenever possible.

Using a Kitchen Island Unit

Using a kitchen island unit for the bar is a great trick—it’s inexpensive, mobile (if desired), looks polished, and offers storage space for alcohol and serving paraphernalia.  If it’s large enough, you can avoid buying costly cabinets.

Look for a pre-owned island and re-stain or re-paint it, or buy a low-cost island online or at a local home improvement store.  Replacing knobs with stainless steel pulls or handles can refresh the island’s appearance for under 30 dollars.  Install inexpensive ceiling lighting near the area or use a small lamp or two on the island top.

Adding Bar Stools

Inexpensive bar stools may be purchased at Ikea or Walmart, or follow a simple barstool design and make your own.  Choose barstools that are sturdy and appealing.  If necessary, add faux leather seat covers.  Aim to have 3-4 chairs at the bar.  The chairs don’t have to match—a mix of different types looks vintage and classy.

Decorating the Bar

Decorating the bar area is simple; mirrors and bar-themed décor are widely available, or you can use old sports and college memorabilia to welcome friends and memories.
