Building a Compost Bin with Wire Mesh

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • A 36 wide roll of wire mesh
  • Pliers
  • Wire cutters
  • Four pieces of 1 x 4 piece of lumber 4-feet long with one end cut into a point
  • Staple gun
  • Gloves
  • Sledge Hammer

Building a compost bin with wire mesh is the fastest way to create a simple compost bin.

Step 1

Cut a 12 to 16-foot length of wire from the roll of fencing. This will give you a 3 to 4-foot diameter compost bin.

Step 2

Place your wood post on the ground or a flat work surface at one end of the wire. Line up the top edge of the wire with the top of the post and run the short width (36”) cut end down the post. Secure the wire with your staple gun the length of the post. Bend the wire into a circle. Attach the other end of the wire to the same post.

Step 3

Set the bin in place and hammer the stake into the ground.

Step 4

Position the rest of your wooden posts evenly around the inside edge of the wire mesh circle and hammer the posts into the ground. The posts should be tight against the wire. Reach inside and staple the mesh to each post.

Step 5

Add the matter to be composted.
