If you have a pet bird, a hanging bird cage is the best gift you can give it. Hanging bird cages comes in a variety of sizes and designs. But, a bird cage made by you can be as good as a store bought one. This is one of the easiest projects you can do. So, next time when you think of doing a project, build a beautiful cage for your lovely pet.

Step 1 – Planning the Design

Proper planning is needed to build a perfect hanging bird cage. First of all, decide the size of the cage. The size of the cage depends on the size of your bird and the number of birds you have. Each bird will have its own minimum space requirements and you should make the cage accordingly. If you do not know the minimum space requirement of your birds, you can get that information from the pet store where you bought the bird.

Step 2 – Sketching your Plan

Take a pen and paper and draw the cage on the paper. You should also include the measurements of the cage. Then, decide how many pieces of wood you will need. Also, remember to include each and every detail on the sketch. This will help you to put together the pieces of the puzzle easily.

Step 3 – Constructing the Frame of the Bird Cage

The most important step of creating a hanging bird cage is constructing the frame. Before construction, you need to give the wood pieces a thorough sanding using sandpaper. Make sure there aren’t any splinters on the wood because it can hurt your bird. Now, you can attach all the pieces of wood together using waterproof glue. If your cage is large, you will have to think about using screws instead of glue because the waterproof glue is not strong enough to keep the wood pieces together in a large cage.

Step 4 – Attach Wooden Rods to the Frame

Make evenly spaced markings on the frame and attach the wooden rods using the waterproof glue. You can use glue to attach the wooden rods, even if you have a large cage. Avoid using nails or screws, as it can hurt your bird.

Step 5 – Make a Door for your Hanging Bird Cage

Cut out a part of the wooden frame from one side. Attach the small door hinge to the bottom frame. Make a small door by making a small door frame and attaching small wood rods to it. Attach the small door to the door hinge using screws.

Step 6 – Decorate your Bird Cage

You can decorate your cage with anything bird-friendly. You can add some toys to the cage. You can also add a swing.

Step 7 – Attach the Hook for Hanging

To hang the bird cage, you should attach a hook at the top of the cage at the center. You can use a thin rope from which to hang your new hanging bird cage.
