Building Walls

Many people think that only professionals should ever attempt building walls, but this isn’t necessarily the case. While building walls does take a good bit of knowledge and tools to accomplish, it can be done all or in part by do-it-yourselfers. Building walls that are structural or load bearing should be left to a contractor, but interior walls and some outdoor walls can be created without any special talents.

What You Need to Know About Building Walls

If you want to start building walls inside your home that are not load bearing, you’ll need to learn some basics about framing and drywall. Framing is actually very simple if you just understand how to make sure things are square, level, plumb, and spaced correctly.

Building walls square, plumb, and level means that they are straight in all directions. To achieve building walls that are “straight” you will need a few simple tools:

  • A level
  • A square
  • A string with a weight attached to the end

You can purchase books or find resources online that will teach you the proper way to construct the framing when building walls. Once the frame is built you will need to install insulation and hang drywall. Other finishing materials besides drywall are also available for building walls, but drywall is the most common and one of the simplest.
