A bunk bed is a type of bed that consists of one bed frame stacked on top of another. It allows two people to sleep in the same room while maximizing the floor space in that room. A bunk bed is often used in places with small amounts of living space, such as on ships, in army quarters, or in prisons. It can also be used in children’s rooms or college dormitories.
Four pillars, each located at a corner of the bed usually support a bunk bed. A ladder is used to ascend to the top bunk. The top bed is normally surrounded by railing to help keep the sleeper from falling from the bed. For safety reasons, it is not recommended that children under the age of six sleep on the top bunk of a bunk bed.
How to Purchase a Bunk Bed
While a bunk bed can be purchased fully assembled, they are often sold in kits to be assembled by the consumer. It is important to assemble a bunk bed according to the directions and to tighten each screw. The consumer should also be certain that the mattress is fully supported before use.
