Buying The Best Wood Type For Your Needs

Follow these guidelines to help you decide which wood will best suit your needs.

Your Budget

Hardwoods, like mahogany and oak, are some of the most expensive woods on the market. There are over 200 types of oak tree, each with density and strength that will work in any application. Mahogany is equally as strong and offers a unique exquisite look. Let your budget guide you in narrowing down your choices.

How Will the Wood Be Used?

Wood that will be used outdoors should be resistant to rotting and decay all year long. For furniture or deck planks, consider woods like teak and tropical eucalyptus.

Woods that will be made into household items like cabinets must be workable and easy to finish, as through staining. Many hard and soft woods are suitable for everyday use, including pine, cypress, willow, mahogany and oak.

For flooring purposes, choose a light-colored wood that won’t show as much wear as a darker alternative.

What Characteristics Do You Need?

All types of wood have both beneficial and undesirable properties. There are woods that are easy to work with, and there are others that will give you a hard time. Some wood types easily accept finishes like stains and seals while others simply won’t.

Cedar is known to have excellent splinter-free properties. This wood is outstanding for use outdoors because it resists decay, molds and mildew. It is also very resistant to damage from insects.

Find as much information as possible on a given wood type before spending your money on it.

What Grade of Wood Fits Your Budget?

Wood is graded for sale and the prices vary accordingly. The highest grades of wood—and the most expensive—are typically those that are most durable and have the least defects.

The Décor of the Room

The type and color of wood that you choose should complement the décor in which it will stay. The shade of the wood can help you decide. Dark woods tend to look best rooms with traditional sty;es while lighter woods are considered the most fitting for more contemporary and casual décor.
