Buying a used refrigerator can save you hundreds of dollars. But that may be a false economy if the one you buy turns out to be a dud. Consider these four warnings before you part with any cash.
1. Avoid Inefficient Appliances
Refrigerators more than 10 years old cost much more to run than modern ones, and leave a significantly bigger carbon footprint. Factor the increased running costs of an older appliance into your budget before you buy a used refrigerator.
2. Measure Up First!
Before you buy a used refrigerator, measure the space you have available at home. It’s not such a bargain if the fridge doesn’t fit.
3. Ask for a Demonstration
Unless you’ve seen it working, a second hand refrigerator is a risky purchase, especially if you are buying it from a private individual rather than a second hand store. Ask the seller for a demonstration if possible. The temperature of a refrigerator in full working order should be between 38 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
4. Ask for a Warranty
If you buy the refrigerator from a second hand store, ask them for a 3 month warranty. Any reputable store should have serviced the appliance, so they should feel confident about its performance.
