Can granite tiles for countertops be installed over ceramic tile?

by DoItYourself Staff

You may be a homeowner who would like to install granite tile for a countertop, and you're wondering if you can install this tile over your existing ceramic tile countertop. The answer is that you can, if the ceramic tile is strong and in good condition.

First, you'll need to clean any oily substance, wax, or dirt from the ceramic tile. Then sand the tile enough to roughen its surface. In laying the tiles with spacers between them, be sure the granite tile lines do not line up with the ceramic tile lines. To complete the installation, follow the normal procedure for laying tiles.
